Description

The Brancacci Chapel is exactly situated in the south transept of the imposing Basilica of Santa Maria del Carmine which dominates the same name square located in the Florentine quarter of Oltrarno.

The Church of Carmine was built in 1268 by some Carmelite friars from Pisa and, like the Basilica of San Lorenzo, has an unfinished facade.

The chapel is famous throughout the world because it houses the valuable cycle of frescoes with the Stories of St. Peter.

The frescoes were made between 1424 and 1428 by the Italian painters Masolino da Panicale and the young Masaccio, his pupil.

However, they remained unfinished due to the premature death of Masaccio, which took place in 1428, and were then completed between 1481 and 1483 by Filippino Lippi.
